The first time she meets him, she got to watch him systematically destroy a nest of vampires. Her instincts screamed at her to join in (to kill), but something else told her to hold back, just let him work out his issues and make sure he doesn't get killed.
It's the first time Faith can remember keeping back in a fight, and she wondered what his story is. More importantly, she wondered why she cares.
Seeing him get shot propels her forward. She sticks her knife in the vampire, twisting it for good measure (she's still not used to the idea of vampires that don't dust) and pulling it out just to repeat the process over and over again until the focus turns to her, for the first time seeing her as the threat that she truly is.
Bodies are laid about among them when Faith finally turns and looks at him. She takes in muscles, blood, and hooded eyes all once and doesn't even both to move for her own weapon when he raises a gun at her.
"Who are you?" He grits out. His eyes flash a threat of what's to come if she gives the wrong answer and Faith just snorts at the bravado.
"I'm the girl who just saved your ass."
She sees a hint of recognition and thinks finally until he squints his eyes. "Ruby?"
"Uh, no." Faith says.
"Christo!" He shouts. Faith tilts her head and raises an eyebrow in question.
Then, all too suddenly, he shifts, uninterested and Faith feels irrational annoyance. "What the fuck ever man." She says turning around and starts to leave the nest. "You should get that bullet hole checked before you die."
By the time she gets to the motorcycle, her mind is on calling Giles and finding out if there's another town nearby that has been reporting rowdy newcomers and random disappearances. She still has energy to burn off.
-----------------------
Faith runs into him a few weeks later, kicking serious demon ass but all Faith can see is the determination and defeat that is the force behind each move. She hadn't seen that combination since she was falling out of a window, praying that the fall broke her neck.
Either way Faith knows how it's going to end- no matter the outcome of the fight. She steps in quickly, kicking and throwing the thing off its balance. She doesn't play games, aggressively fighting until she feels the bone snap under her fingers and the demon falls dead.
"What the fuck are you playing at?" She asks angrily and is surprised at the tone of her voice.
The kid doesn't answer. Just stares at her with something that's almost confusion. Faith decides to clarify anyway. "Whatever has got you up in knots isn't worth it."
"Yes it is," there's a passionate pain behind the words that has Faith changing her tactics. She knows this, lived this and isn't this just what she told G she needed to do? Help the ones who are lost, help those that the golden girl would just let slip through her fingers?
"What's your name?"
He doesn't answer right away, choosing instead to bend down and gather his weapons.
"Sam," He finally says. "Winchester."
"I'm Faith." She informs him. "What do you say we get out of here and you tell me what has you like this." It's not a question despite the light words and Sam's lips twist into a small smile. "What?"
"Nothing. You just remind me of someone."
Faith shoots him a lazy smile. "Don't know what you talking about Sammy. I'm an original."
The smile falls off as easily as it came on. "It's Sam."
-------------------------------
"What do you know about Tricksters?" Faith asks on the phone that night in her room. Sam's room was two doors down. It was another first- she didn't try to screw him and push down memories for the both of them that came from Sam's story. She imagined a softer version of the hunter, cradling his last real tie to the world and watching the light die from his eyes. It was fate and a burden that she didn't wish on anyone as it never really eases from your shoulders.
"They're demigods," was Giles' automatic reply. "Faith what does-"
"Is there a way to summon one?"
"I take it that you won't be meeting me tomorrow."
Faith is silent. She knows that this is the part where she's supposed to explain- give some reason that makes her absence justifiable, but she won't. She's learned that she let herself get too close to that group before and knows now that she can't trust them. Not really. Faith is a little saddened by this fact every time she thinks it, but she made that bed for herself a long time ago. Besides, the simple fact was this wasn't her story to tell.
"It's going to require some research. I'll call you when I have something."
Faith hangs up the phone and crawls into bed despite the terrors she knows await her in her sleep.
-------------------------
Sam checks his messages while he eats and, aside from a look of amused shock when Faith flirts with the waitress, is completely emotionless. Faith didn't expect anything different.
"Why are you helping me?" Sam asks suddenly. It's not in the suspicious tone that Faith thinks she would have been greeted with pre-confession and Faith shrugs. Truth is she honestly doesn't know why. All she knows is she will and that has always been good enough for her in the past.
"I think I want pie." Faith says. "Can we get some to go?"
------------------------
Sam doesn't like Asia, Faith learns.
---------------------
Sam appears at her room one night, eyes tired and drawn. Faith doesn't ask what had happened; she just steps aside and lets him in. She points to the other queen that she started getting from the first time it happened and takes off her clothes to head into bed. She doesn't have to turn her head to know that there is an appreciative look on Sam's face. She had seen it the before, but neither person acted on it.
It was when she watched him as he straighten the bed the next morning, making sure the edges were even that she realized that she hadn't really slept with anyone else. She headed back into the bathroom at the revelation but then chalked it up to getting her fix from the amount of hunting they did.
A week later Faith was on his doorstep.
------------------
Faith is awoken from her sleep by two phones. Sleepily she reaches for the phone and sees Giles number.
"I found something."
Faith turns as she hears same words echoed in Sam's phone.
---------------------
Watching him walk away, Faith can at least take comfort in the fact that she didn't get too attached.

She works on the outside; taking out the vampires that got through both him and his partner as well as one that has a gun.
He turns and Faith takes in hard muscles, blood, and intense eyes.
'Nice work there." Faith says casually. He shoots her a smirk and notes as his eyes trace over her body. "Name's Faith."
"Dean," he answers and Faith smiles. Of course it is.
The other guy stares at her, equal parts shock and something Faith can't put her finger on, and Faith raises an eyebrow in question.
"So, you up for a drink sweetheart?" Dean says and Faith turns attention back to him and shrugs.
"Why not?"
She heads back to her motorcycle, ready to follow them to the nearest bar, mind on the energy she might still get to burn.
